Modernizing Ship-to-Shore Data Replication for a Global Cruise Operator

A global cruise operator needed reliable ship-to-shore data synchronization due to long periods of limited connectivity. AntStack proposed a cloud-agnostic, open-source replication platform that enables bi-directional sync, conflict resolution, and full observability without disrupting legacy systems.

A global cruise operator needed reliable ship-to-shore sync with limited connectivity. AntStack proposed a cloud-agnostic replication platform enabling seamless bi-directional data flow.

Global Cruise Operator

Operating fleets that remain offline for extended durations introduces unique backend complexity. AntStack helped a global cruise operator to re-architect its ship-to-shore data replication backbone. Business-critical data was generated both onboard and onshore, yet depended on fragile, centralized replication.

AntStack assessed the existing system and proposed a resilient, cloud-agnostic replication platform, enabling near-real-time synchronization, conflict handling, and operational visibility at scale.

They partnered with AntStack to modernize its legacy systems using GenAI-powered multi-agent orchestration.

The Challenge

They faced systemic limitations in their backend replication model and were unable to:

  • Maintain data synchronization across ships with prolonged offline operations
  • Resolve data conflicts between ship and shore systems without native tooling
  • Manage operational risk from a replication platform nearing end-of-life
  • Troubleshoot failures with limited visibility across distributed environments

The Objective

The goal was to modernize backend data replication without disrupting mission-critical ship and shore systems.

  • Enable reliable bi-directional data synchronization under intermittent connectivity
  • Preserve existing Relational Database and stored procedures
  • Introduce intelligent conflict detection and resolution
  • Provide centralized monitoring, observability, and reporting

The Solution

Bi-directional Replication: Implemented event-based replication with buffering and retry mechanisms to support intermittent ship connectivity

Conflict Resolution: Centralized logic to detect and resolve concurrent updates between ship and shore systems

Cloud-Agnostic Platform: Built on open-source tools, deployed via Kubernetes, retaining current relational database with CDC and no schema changes

The Impact

AntStack’s team established a clear path to improving ship-to-shore data reliability.

  • Enabled reliable ship-to-shore data synchronization despite network outages
  • Removed dependency on end-of-life replication tooling
  • Preserved existing backend investments without database refactoring
  • Improved operational visibility with centralized monitoring and reporting
  • Reduced operational risk and future-proofed backend replication architecture
