Operations platform for pharmaceutical R&D powered by AWS (AIM266)
Introduction
Mike Kelley, Director at PwC, is the business lead for the R&D operations platform. He focuses on helping organizations in the pharma and life sciences industry solve challenges in R&D operations.
Anirban Chatterji, Director in PwC's Data and Analytics Practice, is the solutions architect responsible for building the R&D operations platform.
Context: Challenges in the Pharmaceutical Industry
Pharmaceutical companies face intense external pressure due to competition, leading to dramatic timelines for product development.
Products are very expensive to develop, and many fail during the clinical development lifecycle.
Pharmaceutical companies need to ensure that every product they invest in is progressing forward as quickly and successfully as possible, while also being accountable for operations (timelines, resources, and costs).
Transition from Point Solutions to an Ecosystem Model
In the past, the industry focused on developing and configuring one-point solutions to try to solve all these challenges.
However, this approach had limitations:
The investment curve was dramatic in terms of time and cost.
Organizations were "stuck in mediocrity" as the capabilities couldn't keep up with technological advancements like generative AI and advanced analytics.
The industry has now moved towards an ecosystem model, leveraging AWS and cloud computing to bring together data sources and enable advanced analytics and generative AI to enhance insights in R&D operations.
The R&D Operations Platform
PwC partnered with AWS to develop the R&D operations platform, which aims to be as close to "plug and play" as possible.
The platform features:
Embedded ontologies and a flexible data model.
Forecasting engines to predict resources and costs.
Machine learning and generative AI capabilities to enhance insights.
The platform focuses on data management, quality, and quick implementation, with a modular design that can be tailored to specific organizational needs.
Platform Capabilities and Demonstration
The platform provides a user-centric, tailored experience with a chatbot and integrated views of portfolio, project, resource, and financial information.
It includes features like:
Parametric forecasting for resources and finances.
Data ingestion and quality management.
Portfolio management and scenario modeling capabilities.
The technical architecture leverages AWS services like S3, Lambda, Glue, Redshift, API Gateway, and GenAI connectors to enable the platform's functionality.
Deployment Options and Customization
PwC offers three deployment options:
Hosted tenant on PwC's AWS infrastructure.
Enabling the platform on the client's AWS stack.
Bespoke solutions using the platform as an accelerator.
The platform's modular components can be repurposed and tailored to meet the specific needs of organizations in various industries, beyond just the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector.
