Revolutionize Kubernetes management with Zesty's optimization platform (KUB102)
Kubernetes Optimization with Zesty
Introduction
Alexey, the CTO and co-founder of Zesty, and Hagit, the VP of Product, presented a session on how Zesty helps Kubernetes customers achieve efficiency and cost savings in their cloud journey.
Zesty has been serving more than 3,000 AWS accounts and global customers since 2019.
The presenters started by asking the audience about their familiarity with Kubernetes and its use in production, indicating the importance of stability and optimization in the Kubernetes journey.
Challenges in Kubernetes Environments
According to industry data, the average utilization of resources in Kubernetes environments is around 30%, which is far from an optimized state.
Cloud engineers often face a trade-off between stability, performance, and cost when managing Kubernetes environments.
The time it takes to provision new nodes in a Kubernetes cluster (around 5 minutes) leads to over-provisioning of resources, resulting in high costs and inefficient utilization.
Zesty's Kompass Platform
Zesty introduced its Kompass platform, a Kubernetes platform that aims to address the challenges of cost efficiency and maintaining desired service-level agreements (SLAs).
The core of the Kompass platform is the ability to ramp up nodes in less than 30 seconds, which is achieved through Zesty's HiberScale technology.
This technology allows Zesty to put nodes into hibernation and quickly bring them back online when needed, reducing the overhead of over-provisioning.
Zesty's Solutions
Headroom Reduction: This solution analyzes the usage patterns in the Kubernetes cluster and identifies the unutilized or underutilized nodes. It then puts these nodes into hibernation, reducing the cost of unused capacity.
Spot Instance Automation: Zesty's platform helps customers increase their adoption of spot instances by ensuring consistent capacity in the cluster, even when spot instances are interrupted. This can lead to up to 70% cost savings for applicable workloads.
Storage Autoscaling: For stateful applications that require persistent storage, Zesty's Storage Autoscaling solution dynamically scales the persistent volumes based on the actual consumption of the pods, leading to significant savings on the storage infrastructure.
Monitoring and Visibility
Zesty's platform provides real-time monitoring and visibility into the Kubernetes clusters, including metrics such as CPU utilization and cost across workloads and clusters.
This visibility helps customers understand the performance and cost implications of their Kubernetes deployments.
Demo
The presenters showcased a live demo of the Headroom Reduction solution, comparing the behavior of two Kubernetes clusters, one with Zesty's platform and one without.
The demo highlighted how Zesty's platform was able to quickly provision hibernated nodes and schedule pods when the CPU utilization increased, minimizing the impact on the service-level agreement (SLA).
Conclusion
Zesty's Kompass platform aims to address the challenges of cost efficiency and SLA maintenance in Kubernetes environments through its innovative HiberScale technology and automated solutions.
The platform offers Headroom Reduction, Spot Instance Automation, and Storage Autoscaling to help customers optimize their Kubernetes deployments and achieve significant cost savings.
Zesty invites attendees to visit their booth (427) to learn more about the platform, see live demos, and speak with the engineering team.
