Unlocking mission-critical new lines of business with AWS and gen AI (AIM117)

Introduction

  1. The session was presented by Michael Geiser from Capgemini America and Sarvant Singh from Penske Transportation Solutions.
  2. Capgemini is an AWS Premier partner and has been working with Penske for their digital transformation initiatives.
  3. Penske Transportation Solutions is a $13.5 billion business with 45,000 associates and 440,000 trucks, providing truck rental, leasing, and logistics services.

Penske's Data Strategy

  1. Penske has recognized data as a core capability and a key driver of business value, especially in the face of trends like vehicle complexity, electric vehicles, sustainability, supply chain resilience, and vehicle uptime.
  2. Penske's data strategy is centered around a logical data platform with a federated governance model, enabling their 45,000 associates to access and leverage data.
  3. Penske has implemented various data-driven initiatives under their "Penske Digital Experience" umbrella, including:
    • Real-time actionable insights for customers
    • Telematics integration and Connected Fleet program
    • Catalyst AI platform for fleet management
    • Intelligent maintenance using predictive and prescriptive AI

Penske's Reference Architecture

  1. Penske has built a complex, scalable, and resilient data platform that can process up to 285 million IoT messages per day.
  2. The platform integrates data from various sources, normalizes and enriches it, and powers multiple AI/ML applications and products.
  3. Key capabilities of the platform include observability, monitoring, and data quality assurance to ensure trustworthy data for internal and external users.

Penske's Generative AI Initiatives

  1. Penske is exploring the use of generative AI, leveraging Amazon Bedrock and other in-house AI models to build products like Digital Tech Assist, IT Service Desk Tech Assist, and a Generative AI API.
  2. Penske is aware of the "AIWORRY" challenge - the need for enterprise-level, cross-functional domain knowledge to complement the limited context provided by individual generative AI models.
  3. Penske proposes an approach that involves interaction management, open telemetry, and "bring your own LLM" to address the challenges of enterprise-wide generative AI adoption.

Future Outlook

  1. Penske foresees continued advancements in autonomy, electric vehicles, sustainable transportation, connectivity, and edge complexity in the transportation industry.
  2. Penske emphasizes the importance of having a "paradox mindset" and a flexible enterprise architecture to navigate these emerging trends.
  3. Penske acknowledges the need for "ecosystem thinking" - the ability to leverage partnerships and the broader ecosystem to drive successful digital transformation.
