AWS offers a variety of NAS file systems on Amazon FSX to help customers migrate on-premises NAS deployments to the cloud.
Customers have chosen FSX for OpenZFS as a destination not just for data sets that were previously stored on ZFS or Linux file servers, but also for data sets from a variety of other open-source or commercial NAS deployments.
Customers choose FSX for OpenZFS for its extensive NAS capabilities, high performance, and cost-effective pricing compared to commercially licensed offerings.
However, customers have faced challenges in bringing their larger data sets to the cloud due to the high cost of all-SSD storage.
Introducing FSX Intelligent Tiering Storage Class
To address these challenges, AWS has launched a new storage class for FSX for OpenZFS called "FSX Intelligent Tiering".
FSX Intelligent Tiering provides fully elastic storage that grows and shrinks to fit the data set, similar to Amazon S3 Intelligent Tiering.
It automatically tiers data between frequent access, infrequent access, and archive tiers, optimizing for cost while maintaining low latency access.
Pricing is the same as S3 Intelligent Tiering, with an additional charge for the monitoring and automation service.
Performance Scalability Enhancements
FSX for Lustre:
Announcement to decouple metadata IOPS provisioning from storage allocation, allowing up to 15x higher metadata IOPS.
Support for Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) and NVIDIA GPU Direct to accelerate per-instance throughput by up to 12x for GPU-based workloads.
FSX for NetApp ONTAP:
Introduced FSX for NetApp ONTAP Gen 2, which allows dynamically adding and removing high-availability (HA) pairs to scale performance and throughput non-disruptively.
Increased throughput and IOPS per HA pair, and added support for NVMe over TCP.
Improved backup restoration experience, allowing applications to start up immediately while data is loaded in the background.
Resilience Enhancements
FSX for OpenZFS Single-AZ HA mode: Provides high availability with low latency and lower storage costs compared to the previous multi-AZ HA option.
Logically air-gapped vaults for EFS backups: Offers immutable backup copies of data that are locked and physically isolated from the account.
Cross-account replication for EFS: Allows replicating data to a separate AWS account for enhanced security and business continuity.
